Change Underline Colour in Word

(Yes, I'm Canadian and I spell it colour, not color!)

Today I've got a nifty underlining trick to share - did you know you can change the colour of the underline, without changing the colour of the font? You could have black text with a purple line underneath it, for example. And it's easy!

Just highlight the text you'd like underlined, go up to your 'Home' tab on the ribbon, and in the 'Font' group you'll see the underline button (the one with an underlined U). If you click the little down-pointing arrow right next to it, you'll see at the bottom an option for 'Underline color'. You can go ahead and choose any colour you like, and you'll see the underline colour has changed but your font colour has stayed the same.

In that same menu you can also change the style of the underline... maybe you'd like it dashed, or thick? Anything you like - it can all be customized right there.

  2. You can do it in PowerPoint, too! Select the text you would like to edit, then press Ctrl + Shift + F to bring up the Font dialog box. In there you'll see 'Underline style', and a dropdown next to it to select 'Underline color'. Hope that helped!

    1. This is probably too late for you but for anyone else who wants to know you can do this on a Mac by clicking 'Format' on the tool bar, then clicking on 'Font' (your first option). It will open a window which will give you the option of changing the underline color.

  4. I hope you've managed to find a solution for yourself. No, I don't know a solution for Mac - I only deal with PC. Good luck!

  6. Thank you! I believe the underline colour is a new feature in Word 2010. This could be tedious if you are underlining many words, but if it's a small one-time thing, you could use the a coloured line shape to underline. Not the best of options, but I think it's what I would do if I really needed to. Best of luck!

  7. Where the heck is the "home" button on MicroSoft Publisher 7? I have no such thing unless it is in with something else. My "ribbon" or a toolbar starts out with File Edit View etc. Nothing with a "home" button.

    1. The home button was what eventually got turned into the File tab on the ribbon. It was just in the 2007 version of the software, so that's why you aren't seeing it. With just a few exceptions, you'll find everything from the old home button in the newer File tab.
